What Is Welding?


Welding is a metal fabrication process used to join two or more metal components by melting and fusing them together using an electric arc. Unlike some other welding methods that rely on pressure, MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding uses high-voltage electricity to generate intense heat, melting the base metals and a filler rod or wire to create a strong, permanent bond.

In MIG welding, a wire, that is fed constantly, serves as both the electrode and filler material, melting into the joint as an electric arc forms between the wire and the workpiece. TIG welding, on the other hand, uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to create the arc, while a separate filler rod is added manually when needed.

Both processes use an inert shielding gas, such as argon or a mix of argon and carbon dioxide (CO₂), to protect the weld from contamination. This gas prevents oxidation and impurities from weakening the weld, ensuring a clean, high-quality joint. The filler rod or wire provides additional material to reinforce the weld, ensuring structural integrity, especially in applications where strength and durability are critical.
